
The Worldwide Prevalence of Diabetes
14th of Nov is once again World Diabetes Day and this year everyone must keep an open eyes on diabetes – the leading cause of kidney disease, non-traumatic lower limb amputations and new blindness. This lifelong disease is now the fastest growing chronic condition in the world. According to the International Diabetes Federation, around 640+ million people will be diagnosed with diabetes by 2040. Compare that number with 415 million patients battling this metabolic disorder in 2015. Around 5-10% of diabetic people have type 1 and 90-95% of them have type 2.
