Before Johannes Gutenberg invent the printing press around 1440, the quantity of manuscript books in medieval Europe could be summed in a few thousands. By 1500, a thousand printing presses were in operation in 250 cities and had printed 8 million copies of books. Today, the world has produced over a trillion books.
