In the movie “The Martian,” Matt Damon plays an astronaut stranded on the desolate surface of the red planet after being presumed dead.     The Martian soil has perchlorate which is poisonous so the growing of potatoes seem impossible.

      The film skipped some details like cleaning the soil to get rid of any toxic mineral contents. Also, mars soil contains a lot of nitrate(a very good fertilizer) that Watney may have not needed to mix his poop with the soil.
